The clock is ticking: You have six months left to update to Windows 11

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 operating system. Some of us are prone to dawdling when it comes to updates, but delaying this upgrade could leave your systems vulnerable.

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 operating system. If you’re still running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or Windows 7 on any workstations, you’ll need to update to Windows 11 — and you should do it sooner, rather than later.

Some of us are prone to dawdling when it comes to OS updates, but delaying this upgrade could leave your systems vulnerable to security risks. Here are some frequently asked questions about this upcoming change:

Do I have to?

Yes.

After October, workstations running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft. Technically, PCs operating on Windows 10 will still work, but they will become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats like malware and ransomware.

Additionally, compatibility issues could arise if you tried to install new software and applications on a computer with an old, unsupported operating system. To safeguard your data, ensure compliance, and maintain smooth operations, you’ll need to install Windows 11 before the October 14 deadline.

Why do I have to?

Updating your operating system has many benefits, including:

  • Improvements in Security: OS updates typically include security patches that address vulnerabilities and protect your system from malware, viruses, and hackers.

  • Ongoing Support: Microsoft regularly provides updates that ensure Windows 11 works seamlessly with new software, drivers, and hardware.

  • Performance Improvements: Newer operating systems often come with enhancements that optimize system performance, improve speed, and fix bugs that might slow down your device.

Updating your OS is also important if your organization is required to meet compliance standards, including HIPAA. Failure to update could lead to non-compliance, fines, and liabilities.

How do I update to Windows 11?

Although you have some time before Windows 10’s official end-of-life date in October, now is the time to make a plan. It’s much easier to get ahead of this so you can schedule your updates and minimize disruptions and downtime.

It’s also important to remember that older workstations may not meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11. If that’s the case, you may need more time to upgrade your hardware or purchase a new computer that is Windows 11 compatible.

If you're a Grand Consulting client, we've probably already reached out to you after evaluating your workstations and determining which ones need upgraded or just simply updated. We have several clients who have already completed this process and are fully upgraded to Windows 11.

If you haven't heard anything from your IT provider or don't have an IT provider, Grand Consulting can help. We’ll partner with you to evaluate your current hardware and work with you to put together a plan for updating everything before October. Contact us if you have any more questions about the Windows 11 software update.
